About This Call
The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs through its Art in Public Places Program requests qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create monumental works of public art for the new Miami Marlins Ballpark. This is an open call to all professional artists or artist teams. The estimated public art budget is $5,500,000.
The ballpark will be constructed on approximately 17 acres of the historic Orange Bowl site in Little Havana, located just west of downtown Miami. The facility will feature a retractable roof, natural grass playing field, and capacity of 37,000 spectators. The architecture is based on the concept of "water merging with land," symbolic of Miami's proximity to the coast, and is designed to meet LEED standards.
Six opportunities for public art integration have been identified: Home Run Entertainment Feature ($2.5 million), Plaza Roof Column Illumination ($1 million), Stadium Entrance/Plaza ($1 million), Children's Recreation Area ($1.5 million), Glass Curtain Wall at Street Level ($2 million), and Commemorative Marker ($300,000). Artists may express interest in one or more opportunities and must submit a preliminary statement detailing their initial approach. Artists should consider permanence, maintenance requirements, Miami-Dade's environmental conditions, and LEED standards in conceptualizing projects. The ballpark opening is scheduled for April 2012. Application deadline is August 14, 2009. Miami-Dade employees and selection panelists and their immediate family members are excluded from participation.
