About This Call

The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, through its Art in Public Places Program, seeks qualifications from professional artists and artist teams to create a design for the Zoo Miami amphitheater canopy. The project is a collaboration between Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces and Miami-Dade Art in Public Places.

The amphitheater canopy replacement project is located at Zoo Miami, 12400 SW 152nd Street, Miami, FL 33177. The canopy consists of six sections, each measuring 54 feet in length and approximately 10 feet in height, for a total of 324 linear feet. The estimated project budget is $150,000, inclusive of all costs to design, fabricate, install and implement art projects. The amphitheater will house animal shows, presentations, small concerts and special speakers. Artists are encouraged to enhance the architectural canopy with an inspiring concept that will enliven the structure with dynamic imagery. When choosing exterior materials, artists must consider permanence and how materials function in Miami-Dade's intense sunlight, heat, humidity, winds and rains.

Eligibility is open to all professional artists residing in Miami-Dade County. Applications from architects, landscape architects or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. Miami-Dade employees, selection panelists and their immediate family members are excluded from participation. The application deadline is September 13, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants must submit 10 images. The estimated project schedule includes initial PAC meeting in October 2013, project orientation visit in November 2013, finalist interviews and recommendations in January 2014, design completion by May 2014, and project completion by October 2014. This is a time-sensitive project and artists must be able to adhere to the anticipated schedule.
