About This Call
This is an open call to professional artists residing in South Florida to design a terrazzo floor for the interior lobby of the Arts and Culture Center of Aventura. The facility, located at the terminus of NE 188th Street adjacent to Biscayne Bay, is a 14,000 square foot state-of-the-art building designed in accordance with green building criteria.
The interior lobby terrazzo floor design should be 3,500 square feet and reflect the organic forms and bright colors of the architecture. The design may incorporate or artistically express the site's proximity to Biscayne Bay, drawing inspiration from the natural environs of the area. Painters, printmakers, illustrators, and other artists specializing in two-dimensional design are encouraged to apply. The estimated budget for this project is $80,000, which must be inclusive of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and all other costs associated with implementation. The construction project has allocated an additional $25 per square foot for the fabrication and installation of a basic terrazzo floor.
A three-member panel of arts professionals will identify finalists who will receive a $1,000 honorarium to develop specific proposals. Selection criteria include previous artistic accomplishment, public art experience, and initial approach to the project. The project timeline is time-sensitive: applications due May 29, 2009; initial PAC meeting June 1-4, 2009; finalist interviews July 27-31, 2009; artist begins design September 2009; 100% design November 2009; fabrication substantially complete January 2010; project completion February 2010. Miami-Dade employees and selection panelists' immediate family members are excluded from participation. All submissions must be received online via CaFÉ. There is no application fee.
