About This Call
Miami-Dade Art in Public Places is seeking professional artists to create public art for the Arcola Police Station and Community Center, located at NW 7th Avenue and 183rd Street in Miami, Florida. The station will serve the public through community-oriented services and features a double-height lobby with a curvilinear Meeting Hall seating 115 people.
Two art opportunities are available: an exterior paving design for the main entry plaza that draws inspiration from policing philosophies and emblematic images representative of the Miami-Dade Police Department, and a complementary exterior wall art component at the entry to the main lobby and community service offices. Artists must consider the permanence of artwork and its function in Miami-Dade's harsh sunlight. The estimated project budget is $362,000, which includes $162,000 for art-specific work and $200,000 for a 20,000 sq ft paving system. This budget must cover all design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and implementation costs.
Applicants are required to develop and implement a community outreach program related to the project to create awareness, respect, and understanding about local law enforcement through art. This may include organizing community focus groups, developing hands-on activities during fabrication and installation, or creating artwork that fosters dialogue between police and the community. Professional artists with demonstrated experience in creating signature works are strongly encouraged to apply. Miami-Dade employees, selection panelists, and their immediate family members are excluded from participation. Finalists will receive a $700 honorarium to develop specific proposals. The application deadline is May 29, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Submissions must be made through CaFÉ online application system with 10 images required. There is no application fee.
