About This Call
The 2008 painting competition is dedicated to the idea that painting as a tradition is alive and well in the world of contemporary art. The competition is open to all graduate students of fine arts who have been enrolled in a graduate program during the 2007 and/or 2008 calendar years. As this is an international call for entries, students of any country or nationality are encouraged to apply.
In a contemporary environment, there is no set criteria as to what constitutes painting. Graduate students who consider their work to include painting as a medium and to be a continuation of the painting tradition are encouraged to apply. This can include printmaking or other forms where painting is integrated or critically enhances the scope of the work. The jury will consider all entries and select 18 winners (6 from North America, 6 from Europe, and 6 from the east, including Asia/Australia/India). Winners will be announced by December 31st via international press release.
Exhibitions celebrating the achievements of the 18 winners will take place in April/May 2009 in New York, Los Angeles, and Beijing, with exact dates to be determined. Each winner will receive a $1,000 award and be flown to their exhibition city for the opening. Winners will have the opportunity to meet major gallery owners, curators, and collectors at a special VIP reception. Winners and their affiliated school names will be announced in Art Forum magazine and publicized widely. The submission fee is $45.00 (USD). Entries are accepted between September 1, 2008 and December 1, 2008. Five images are required for submission.
