About This Call

The Metro Nashville Arts Commission is soliciting design proposals from artists to design bicycle racks scheduled for fabrication and installation in various locations throughout Nashville-Davidson County in Fall 2012. The project is open to professional artists working in all media who reside within approximately 250 miles of Nashville, including Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Bowling Green, Paducah, Louisville, Huntsville and Birmingham. Artists with conflicts of interest as outlined in the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County's Public Art Guidelines are ineligible.

Approximately 20 to 30 artist design proposals will be selected, and multiples of some designs may be fabricated. Artists may submit up to three design proposals. The project budget allocates $3,500 for the artist design fee, project-related travel, consultation throughout project fabrication and installation, plus other artist-related costs. Fabrication, installation and site preparation costs will be paid by Metro. The artist will work with the fabricator and be onsite at time of installation to ensure the project is completed as designed.

Rack designs may be inspired by Nashville's history, culture or natural features and assets. Designs should carefully balance form with function and must comply with national bicycle parking standards and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Proposals will be selected based on artistic merit, design context-sensitivity, functionality, safety, and the artist's ability to work collaboratively. Submissions must include a one-page letter of interest, up to three image files (one image per design), a brief design description, current résumé (not to exceed four pages), and one-page references listing three people with whom you have worked on an art project. Deadline for submission: 12 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, Mountain Standard Time. Direct all questions by email to [email protected] with "Bike Rack" in the subject line.
