About This Call
The City of Montrose, Colorado, is seeking proposals from experienced mural and metalsmith artists to design and install a large-scale, interactive, and community-inspired art installation on the southwest exterior wall of City Hall. Collaborative proposals from teams of artists are welcomed, particularly where distinct skill sets are needed to integrate both mural and metalwork components. This installation will be permanent with a minimum lifespan of 10 years.
The installation should be an interactive landmark that immerses residents and visitors in Montrose's natural landscape, combining a mural and metalwork attached to the building. The design should engage the public through features like photo opportunities, 3D elements offering unique perspectives, or designs that shift with the viewer's angle. The artwork should draw inspiration from Montrose's distinctive landscape, including the Black Canyon, the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers, high desert terrain, or surrounding mountain backdrop. The site is the southwest exterior wall of City Hall (400 E Main Street, Montrose CO 81401), measuring 24'-9"W x 25'-0"T with smooth brick and metal plates. The wall is west-facing with extensive sun exposure and nighttime lighting.
Total budget is $40,000, covering all design, materials, labor, equipment, transportation, insurance, and installation costs. The City may provide logistical support such as access to scaffolding or a lift. Applicants must submit 6-20 digital images or videos of previously completed work, a current résumé, and a statement of interest (250 words or less) via the CaFÉ™ system. There is no application fee. Eligible applicants are professional artists or artist teams nationwide, 18+ years old and legally eligible to work in the United States, with preference for those with experience in large-scale, long-lasting public murals or metalwork. Selected artists must complete installation by September 30, 2025, carry $1 million general liability insurance, and execute the design as presented. Semifinalists will receive a $750 honorarium for preparing a final proposal.
