About This Call
Metal Complexions is a juried exhibition of jewelry and metalwork presented by the Houston Metal Arts Guild (HMAG) and held at the Jung Center in Houston's Museum District. The exhibition celebrates the diverse field of metalworking through jewelry and objects. "Complexion" is defined as an outlook, attitude, point of view or the outward appearance of something or someone. The Houston Metal Arts Guild invites artists to share jewelry or objects that explore these ideas through metalworking techniques—whether wearable, utilitarian, or sculptural objects that express a particular perspective or showcase distinctive texture or surface qualities.
This juried exhibition is open to all artists over 18 who reside in the United States. All entries must be original designs completed within the last two years and not previously exhibited in Houston. Entries must contain a significant visual handmade metal element and may not exceed 30" x 48" in dimension or weigh more than 75 lbs. including packaging. Artists must provide a brief statement (200 words maximum) explaining how their entries address the theme. A maximum of three entries per artist is permitted. The entry fee is $25 for HMAG members and $40 for non-members. Artists may submit one image and one optional detail shot for each entry. Application deadline: November 30, 2019 at midnight CST. Notification via email: January 15, 2020. Exhibition dates: February 2–28, 2020. Opening reception: February 7, 2020, 6–9 PM. Artwork will be returned on or before March 31, 2020.
The 2020 juror is Anna Walker, Windgate Foundation Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts, Craft, and Design at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). HMAG will award $1,000 at the juror's discretion, including a $500 Best in Show award plus additional monetary and recognition awards. All works must have a sale price or be marked Not For Sale with an insurance value of 50% retail. Artists are responsible for all transit costs. Work cannot be deinstalled before the end of the exhibition.
