About This Call
Mesa State College is seeking artists for a public art commission at the New Classroom Building, an 80,000 sq. ft. facility housing the Business School and Teacher Education programs. The building includes classrooms, lecture halls, a conference room, faculty offices, and wide corridors in a serpentine shape designed to extend the learning environment.
Artists working in 2-dimensional art may apply for large scale works to be placed throughout the interior of the building. Staircases and an atrium area can accommodate kinetic sculpture. Opportunities are also available on certain exterior areas for relief attached to the exterior wall or 3-dimensional pieces placed close to the facility. A total art budget of $93,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and other costs. The Art Selection Committee will determine whether to commission one piece or divide funding among multiple locations.
This call is open to artists residing in the United States only. Artists with a current grant with the State are not eligible to apply. An artist with an existing public art contract with the Colorado Council on the Arts is not eligible for another Art in Public Places project until the current contract is over 50% complete. Applicants must submit six digital images, a resume, and an artist statement of no more than 2,000 characters. There is no application fee. Semi-finalists will be notified by March 2009 and invited to interview and submit an in-depth proposal for a small honorarium that will be applied toward the commission amount. Installation of artwork is scheduled for Fall 2009.
