Memories + Marigolds

1202 Contemporary invites emerging and mid-career artists to submit proposals for the annual exhibition Memories + Marigolds, celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This exhibition elevates the artistic creation of the Ofrenda (altar) as a profound and essential contemporary art form, honoring the sacred Mexican tradition of welcoming the souls of departed ancestors and loved ones. The gallery seeks designs for freestanding or wall-hanging altars that blend traditional symbolism (like marigolds and cempasúchil) with contemporary artistic expression. Works should tell personal stories, honor cultural heritage, and reflect on the cyclical nature of life and death. The exhibition will also feature an immersive element showcasing Día de los Muertos garments created by a local fashion designer, celebrating the tradition through contemporary textiles and design.

This call is open to artists globally, with priority for the in-person show given to artists in the Bay Area. The gallery will select 5-10 pieces for the exhibition. Artwork may be for sale or not for sale/on loan. The standard commission rate is 20% for sales made in the gallery or via the website, and 28% for sales sold through Artsy. Installation/drop-off is October 13–17 by appointment, with altars required to be fully completed and show-ready by 3:00 PM on October 17th. The opening reception is Friday, October 17, 5:00 PM–8:00 PM during the Third Friday Art Walk. The exhibition runs through November 19 at The Clove Art Complex in Gilroy. Gallery hours are 7:00 AM–9:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 7:00 AM–11:00 PM Friday and Saturday. Artwork pick-up is November 20–21 by appointment.

Entry fee is $25.00. Submissions must include 5-10 work samples (minimum 5 images, maximum 10 images and up to 5 videos). Applicants must include a short bio and artist statement. Submission deadline is October 11, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notification of selections is October 12. Photos and artwork information are due October 14.
