About This Call
The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs requests submissions from artists, landscape architects, or artist/architect teams to design, fabricate, and install an outdoor public artwork at Martyr's Park (379 Commerce Street, Dallas, Texas 75207). The artwork should create a tribute to the memory of victims of lynching and racial violence in Dallas between 1853-1920.
Artwork must include references to known victims of lynching and racial violence in Dallas during this period and be visually accessible within the approved location. The design must be resistant to graffiti and vandalism, require minimal maintenance, and have an expected lifespan of 20 years. If seating is included, it must be safe, slip-resistant, and comply with City of Dallas and ADA requirements. All designs must be free of safety hazards and responsive to community input available at https://dallasculture.org/publicart/dallas-victims-of-racial-violence/.
A panel of arts professionals and community representatives will review qualified submissions in February 2020. Three short-listed artists will be commissioned to create concept designs and receive a $1,500 stipend to present their designs to the selection panel. Final designs must demonstrate that the artwork can be completed within the commission budget of $100,000, including insurance, engineering, fabrication, foundations, and artist's fees. This is an open call; Texas artists will be given preference. Diversity candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Undergraduate students, current City of Dallas Public Art Program contractors, City employees, their spouses, Public Art Committee members, Arts and Culture Advisory Commission members, and project consultants are ineligible. Submittal materials include a cover letter, resume, six JPEG images of current work with titles, sizes, media, dates, and commission values, and three references with contact information.
