About This Call

Memento Mori and the Macabre is an exhibition open to artists in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, CA. The exhibition explores memento mori, vanitas, the macabre, and related themes that contemplate the fragility and ephemeral nature of life. Original works of art in the following media are welcome: sculpture and assemblage; paintings, drawings, and collage; photographs or digital art; and printmaking. Work must have been produced within the last five years.

The exhibition is in collaboration with Bunny King Productions in Huntington Beach and will be an immersive experience in visual arts, music, and drama, featuring theatrical read-alouds from classical literature, an opera singer, a Masquerade Ball, Tarot card readings, and memento rituals. The show runs from October 14 to November 11, Friday through Sunday, 1-4PM, with opening events on October 14 and 15. Work will be evaluated by three jurors from different disciplines based on creativity, relevance, and craftsmanship.

Entry fee is $16 (non-refundable). Each artist may submit a maximum of 3 works. Work must not exceed 36 inches in any direction (including frame), must be ready to hang with proper picture wire and d-rings in a sturdy frame, must be for sale and reasonably priced, and must be neatly and professionally presented. All work must match the submitted photograph. Deadline to submit work is Wednesday, September 6 at 10PM. Notification to artists will be the week of September 18. Work drop-off is September 30, 10AM-noon and October 1, 3-5PM. Artists pick up work November 11, 4-6PM, or November 12, 10AM-noon.
