About This Call

The Mecklenburg County Courts District is seeking artists for a public art project at the renovated Criminal Courts Building located at 700 E. 4th St., Charlotte, NC 28202. The building, which reopened in February 2007, is undergoing interior renovation of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors to accommodate the Office of the Public Defender and a consolidated Human Resources Department for both the County and City of Charlotte. The project will be LEED certified with completion scheduled for January 2009.

Public art will enhance the environment and contribute to the overall identity of the building. The focus is on two-dimensional artwork, including glass, wood, metal, paintings, or mixed media. This project is open to local, regional, and national artists. Given the extensiveness of the renovation space, the Public Art Commission may identify several artists for the project. The total budget for 2-3 projects is $187,500.

Submission materials required: letter of interest, professional resume (not to exceed 3 pages), ten (10) images of past work, and three (3) professional references. Selection of artists will take place during April 2008, with artists beginning work with the design team soon after contracts are finalized. Artists who have received a commission or purchase for over $25,000 cannot be considered for another commission or purchase for 3 years after the date of a signed contract or letter of agreement. ASC staff, County or City staff, Public Art Commission members, or their immediate families are not eligible. Due to overwhelming interest, applications will not be accepted once 150 submissions are received.
