McLean Community Center Public Art Project - Typographical Sculpture - Finalist Proposals

You have been selected as one of four finalists for the McLean Community Center's Public Art Typographical Sculpture Project in McLean, Virginia. The permanent work of art will be installed at 1234 Ingleside Avenue in Spring 2025. The selected artist/team will design, fabricate and install a permanent typographic work of art based on MCC letters/logo that will welcome residents to the McLean Community Center and provide place-making for the area. Finalists will receive an honorarium of $500.

The $80,000 artist fee includes design, materials, fabrication, insurance, travel, packing, shipping, installation and a maintenance plan for the artwork. All necessary site preparation, such as the concrete base and junction box for lighting will be provided by McLean Community Center. The installation site is located in a grassy area adjacent to the public sidewalk near the plaza entrance of the building, at the corner of Ingleside Ave. and Oak Ridge Ave.

Finalists must submit a proposal by October 18, 2024 including: a written description of the project (up to 1000 words) with an overview of the concept, materials, fabrication method, approximate weight and dimensions; visual illustrations including a rendering in all light conditions; a site plan to scale showing how the artwork will fit into the site; preliminary budget(s) addressing major costs; and a W-9 Form. Finalist interviews will take place in the last two weeks of October 2024, with artist selection and contract award in early November 2024. Final design review is scheduled for January 2025 and installation for April 2025.
