About This Call
This public art project offers a commission opportunity for a site-specific public art mural through a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process. The vision of the McCaslin Underpass Mural Project is to feature a site-specific public art piece that can help define the neighborhood, elevate the vibe of the path within the tunnel, and harken back to the area's history in a contemporary style and manner. The placement of the mural will highlight and showcase the connection between Old Town Superior (lost in the Marshall Fire) and the new Downtown Superior on the opposite side of the tunnel to the east.
For semi-finalists, the site-specific design would be for one side of the tunnel (not both) with the ultimate desire to cover as much of the 100-foot wall as possible. Design could be simple or complex, with themes that could embody a modern spin on the Town's history, western culture, or Superior's geographical gateway location. Abstract, aesthetically-pleasing designs that use color and shapes in creative ways will also be considered. The budget for the site-specific design commission is $17,650 and shall be inclusive of all associated costs including design fee, materials, fabrication, engineering, insurance, transportation, site preparation, installation, protective coating, travel and accommodations, documentation, permits, site modification and restoration, contingency, and overhead.
Applicants must submit a minimum of six (6) or maximum of ten (10) digital images of completed commissioned murals, with no more than 2 images per project. A corresponding list describing the images (dimensions, title, year, material description, budget, etc.), resume demonstrating experience with commissioned site-specific public art pieces, and a letter of interest are required. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents at least 18 years of age. Eligible applicants include creatives working in paint, murals, and design, applying as individuals or creative teams. The selection panel will narrow down candidates to no more than three (3) semi-finalists who will be invited to the RFP stage and paid a stipend of $450.00 to prepare and present a proposal. Semi-finalists will present a full-color rendering of their design proposal and a detailed budget. The selected creative/creative team will enter into a contract agreement with the Town of Superior and must carry general liability insurance of $1 million.
