Maynard As A Canvas

Maynard As A Canvas is a public art competition seeking mural designs for two exterior brick walls at 7 Waltham St, Maynard, MA. The competition is open to artists with previous mural painting experience who must provide evidence of past work.

Two walls are available for murals: Mural 1 (Route 27 side) measures 71' length by 10'6" height (750 square feet, with 4 windows subtracted), and Mural 2 (Route 62 parking lot side) measures 71' length by 16' height (1050 square feet, with 4 windows subtracted). Both walls feature windows that cannot be covered. Applicants may submit any number of designs, with each application representing one proposed mural and up to 10 images of that design. The walls will be prepared with holes filled, vents removed, openings sealed, and pressure-washed before priming. Trees on the Route 27 side will be cut down to allow full use of the mural wall.

From the initial applicant pool, the Maynard Cultural Council will select several finalists to create detailed visualizations of their proposed murals. Finalists will be compensated $150 each for their detailed visual proposals. A jury of community representatives, Maynard Cultural Council members, and artists will select up to two murals from the finalist submissions. The winning proposal(s) will receive an agreed all-inclusive fee per wall. One artist may create both murals, or separate artists may be selected for each. Artists must submit a budget estimate for artwork, design, and installation not to exceed $24,000 total for two murals (or split between two artists if applicable). Entry deadline is February 4, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Short-listed proposals will be announced February 25, 2018, with visualization deadline March 18, 2018.
