About This Call
Maui Public Art Corps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2020, is seeking artist proposals that interpret stories from the Hui Mo'olelo: Lahaina program as works of visual, performance, or experiential public art. Applicants must base their proposals on recording excerpts from the program and are invited to work with community consultants to integrate feedback into their initial proposals, creating site-specific, collaborative pieces. Artists will also work with cultural consultant Kumu Sissy Lake-Farm to identify a proverb from Mary Kawena Pukui's 'Ōlelo No'eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings to provide historical and cultural significance to their work.
Five project opportunities are available: (C1) Mural at King Kamehameha III Elementary temporary replacement campus (100 Akahele St, Lahaina) - ten sections measuring approximately 8' tall x 7' wide on vinyl magnetic sheets, budget cap $12,000, installation deadline November 22, 2024; (C2) Mural at Kaiser Permanente Lahaina Clinic (2301 Kaanapali Pkwy, Lahaina) on a 60-foot temporary barrier, budget cap $9,000, installation deadline December 15, 2024; (C3) Pop-Up Performance at various sites throughout Maui County - 20-30 minute original music, dance, theater or performance art, budget cap $5,000, performance deadline March 1, 2025; (C4) Hui Mo'olelo Animated Short Films using the recording excerpt as soundtrack, budget cap $5,000 per film, delivery deadline March 1, 2025; (C5) Open Call for public art with a specific site and community engagement opportunities, budget cap $15,000, delivery deadline March 1, 2025.
Applications must be submitted via CaFÉ by September 8, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fee is $10.00. Required application materials include artist bio (approximately 250 words), one to two page résumé highlighting communal or public art experience and two references, statement of interest, project description explaining how the selected recording will inform the work and opportunities for community engagement, and project budget in increments of $100. All artists 18 years and older are eligible to apply. Selected artists will be required to provide a W-9 to Lokahi Pacific, the project's fiscal sponsor.
