About This Call
Maui Public Art Corps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2020, is seeking artist proposals that interpret stories from the Hui Mo'olelo program as works of visual, performance, or experiential public art. The organization connects people, place, and story through the development of exceptional public art across Maui County.
Applicants should base proposals on excerpts from the Hui Mo'olelo program, though upon selection, artists may choose any part of the full recording for their final project. Upon selection by a community panel, artists will be paired with community consultants to integrate feedback into their initial proposal, creating site-specific, collaborative pieces. This project development period includes identifying a unique proverb from Mary Kawena Pukui's 'Ōlelo No'eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings with cultural consultant Kumu Sissy Lake-Farm.
Six project opportunities are available: Harbor Lights Mural (40' x 17' panels, $12,000 per section, installation week of Mar 12), Kapalua Coastal Trail Sculpture Walk (3-6 month exhibition, $3,500, installation Apr 8), Kalama Park Footbridge (physical or hybrid visual-digital experience, $20,000, installation Jun 30), Keōpūolani Regional Park Walking Path (temporary sculpture, $3,500, installation Jun 30), Pop-Up Performance (20-30 minute original performance, $5,000, performance by Aug 28), and Hui Mo'olelo Animated Short Films ($5,000 per film, delivery Jun 30). Entry fee is $10. Artists 18 and older are eligible to apply. Selected artists must provide a W-9 and engage in project development to determine community involvement opportunities and confirm cultural proverb connections. Applications are received via CaFÉ only and must include artist bio, résumé, statement of interest, project description with budget, and work samples.
