About This Call
Material Identity is a national juried exhibition hosted by Artworks Center for Contemporary Art. The exhibition invites artists and makers to explore how materiality represents identity, examining whether the material used dictates who they are as makers and how medium speaks to individual identity.
Artists age 18 and older working in craft media are eligible to apply. Eligible media include functional or sculptural works in basketry, ceramics, fiber, furniture (any media), glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, handmade paper, and wood. Fine art media such as painting, photography, and lithography are not eligible unless incorporated into an otherwise eligible medium. Decorated furniture, candles, pressed flowers, handmade reproductions, and objects made from commercial kits or commercially available plans are also not eligible. Entry fee is $30.00. Applicants must submit 1-6 work samples (images, audio, or video combined).
Jurors include Jiseon Lee Isbara, an artist and educator with an MFA in Fibers from Colorado State University and Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea, and Jessica Kooiman Parker, a curator and creative director with extensive experience in contemporary art and film programming. All works must be received by July 1, 2020, shipped prepaid via UPS, USPS, DHL, or FedEx with a prepaid return-shipping label. Awards include Best in Show ($1,000) and Honorable Mention ($200).
