About This Call
The Maricopa Community Colleges Theater Design & Theater Acting Competitions invite student entries from MCCCD institutions. Student online registration deadline is Friday, March 7, 2014. All entries will be notified by March 19, 2014, with assigned appointments for adjudication on March 21, 2014. Failure to appear at the appointed time withdraws entry from the adjudication process.
First Place winners in each category will perform or present at the Artist of Promise Gala event on April 8, 2014 (rehearsal) and April 9, 2014 (performance) at the Orpheum Theatre. All First Place performance winners are expected to be available for both the dress rehearsal and the performance. All awards will be presented at this event.
THEATRE ACTING: Competitors must perform one 2-person scene and one monologue not to exceed a combined 5 minutes of time, with a 15 second grace period allowing a maximum of 5:15. Time will begin with the first motivated action or first word of dialogue. Entrants must be bona fide, enrolled students selected for outstanding performance achievement by their Theatre Coordinator. A total of six entries per college may be submitted. Published theatrical works and originally written works are encouraged; material from film scripts is highly discouraged. Appropriate competition dress is required. Scene partners are not considered competitors for award consideration but are integral to determining high quality performance. Competitors may participate as scene partners in one additional competitor's scene.
THEATRE DESIGN: Any bona fide student designer may participate. Six theatrical design focus areas are accepted: Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design, Makeup Design, and Properties Design. The competition will award one overall first-place winner ($300), one second-place recipient ($200), one third-place recipient ($100), and one fourth-place honorable mention. Student designers will be provided a 4' X 4' space (16 square feet) of wall and/or table space for design presentation materials. Designers must present a ten-minute design presentation/explanation to the judges, followed by five minutes for follow-up questions. Design display boards must be mounted on foam-core board no larger than 4' x 4'. At least three 8" x 10" color photographs are recommended as part of the design presentation materials. Specific requirements for each design category are detailed in the guidelines.
