Margate Utility Box Public Art Project

The City of Margate and Margate Community Redevelopment Area (MCRA) invite artists to create artwork for utility boxes throughout the city. Using Margate as inspiration, artists are asked to create work that showcases the city's assets, including waterways, green spaces, and people. Submitted ideas must have a Margate-inspired element. Digitally enhanced photography is accepted. Phase one of this project will include 11 utility boxes along Atlantic Boulevard, Coconut Creek Parkway, and Copans Road. Artwork will be digitally scanned and printed to adhesive film that will be adhered to the utility boxes.

Artwork must be submitted as original vector-based digital files at minimum 300 dpi. Designs must be able to cover the template area, be clearly visible from a distance, and scale to different size boxes. The MCRA and City are seeking artwork and photographs that reflect Margate, including the city's clock tower, waterways, wildlife park amenities, burrowing owls, children's activities, sports, and nature scapes. Images should be clearly identifiable as City of Margate locations. Utility boxes vary in size; exact dimensions will be provided once artists are selected.

Eligible artists must reside in Broward, Palm Beach, or Miami-Dade counties, with preference given to Margate residents. Proof of residency is required. Artists must be at least 18 years old, have a recognized body of work, and submit a resume, artist's statement, and listings of all public exhibitions and commissions. The submission fee is not to exceed $300 per art piece, with a maximum of three pieces per artist. Submitted artwork will become the property of the MCRA and City of Margate and may not be used for any other purpose without written consent. Designs are prohibited from featuring tobacco, alcohol, demeaning language, profanity, firearms, violence, unlawful goods or services, obscenity, nudity, endorsements without authorization, adult-oriented goods or services, or content that could interfere with traffic. Application package is due by end of business on November 10, 2017.
