About This Call
Mare Island Artyard is seeking six self-standing sculpture installations for public display on Mare Island in Vallejo, California, from May 15, 2025 through May 15, 2026. Selected artists will receive a stipend between $5,000-$8,000 depending on the size and quality of the artwork. Local Edition Creative will supply heavy equipment including crane, VR forklift, and scissor lift as needed, along with skilled equipment operators experienced in handling and installing art. Artists are responsible for assembling and disassembling their own work.
The display area is located along the Napa River waterfront, open to the public 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM daily. The site hosts various events throughout the year including marathons, concerts, and Maker Faire, providing significant visibility to diverse audiences. Mare Island Artyard is free to the public.
Artwork must be contemporary, imaginative, and suitable for a broad general public. All pieces must be self-standing and already constructed (no spec work). Submissions require a minimum of 3 clear recent images, artist bio, artwork description, medium/dimensions/tech specs, and a construction overview addressing durability for 12-month outdoor display. Artwork must withstand hot, sunny weather and winter storms with rain and cold temperatures. Pieces requiring ground anchoring will not be considered. Some structures may require stamped engineering drawings from a certified engineer. Large-scale work best viewed in daytime is preferred; LED components are acceptable with access to power provided. Artists must commit to the full 12-month display period and sign an agreement and W9 upon selection. Submissions are reviewed on an ongoing basis with all artworks finalized by April 1, 2025.
