About This Call
Making a Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking is an exhibition at The Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia running October 4, 2019 - January 18, 2020. The exhibition showcases women working in wood across all genres and technical approaches. Understanding that the field has historically been dominated by males, this exhibition intends to showcase the breadth of the current field of woodworking and how these makers are both expanding the edges of the field and holding down the center. Pieces included should reference an approach to woodworking derived or adjacent to the furniture-making tradition and rooted in questions of craft, use, the body, and domesticity. Selected pieces need not take on all these concerns.
Eligibility is open to all self-identified women, including transwomen, in North America. Work submitted must be original in design. Collaborative work is accepted. Work must be available for the duration of the exhibition. If work was created in a school setting, include in your artist's statement a description of faculty involvement in conception and execution.
Applicants may submit 6-12 images representing at least two original pieces (minimum 2 images per work recommended). Each image should be titled with last name, first initial, and image number (e.g., DoeJ1, DoeJ2). Include detailed information with each image: title, medium, dimensions, date completed. Submit an artist's statement (1-2 pages) describing your intentions, technical approach, and view of where your work fits into the field of woodworking. Include a CV. Entry fee is $10. The Center will share shipping costs up to $250 for selected works. Notification of accepted and declined work: May 20, 2019. Delivery of work: September 24-26, 2019. Work return shipping: January 2020. Jurors: Laura Mays, Deirdre Visser, Jennifer-Navva Milliken, Cheryl Riley, and Tom Loeser.
