About This Call
The City of Arvada's Arts & Culture Commission is seeking a qualified artist or artist team to design and paint a mural on a four-walled structure located at the Majestic View Nature Center (MVNC), an 80-acre environmental education facility. The structure has a total square footage of 1,144 across four walls: North facing wall (35 ft wide x 9 ft tall = 315 sq. ft.), South facing wall (35 ft wide x 11 ft tall = 385 sq. ft.), and West and East facing walls (20 ft wide x 11 ft tall slanted = 444 sq. ft. combined). The mural concept should highlight the location of Majestic View and its connection to environmental learning and community inspiration.
The selected artist(s) will be awarded a $25,000 contract for all phases of the project, including design, materials, installation labor, travel, per diem, documentation, equipment rental, and any other costs related to mural creation. The Arvada Arts and Culture Commission will fund and supply protective graffiti coating. The mural is open to various 2-dimensional concepts, including representational and non-representational imagery. Designs covering all four sides will be prioritized. The mural should blend into the existing habitat and environment, with location-specific Colorado plants and animals preferred. Depiction of humans is not preferred.
Applicants must be 18 years or older and hold a current Colorado home or studio address. The Commission will review and select up to four finalists based on resumes and work examples. Finalists will complete full proposals; those not selected will receive a $250 honorarium. The timeline includes: call open July 14 through July 31 at 11:59 PM, jurying August 1-5, finalists notified August 5, final proposals due August 29 at 11:59 PM, and mural completion by November 2025. The selected artist agrees to participate in press and media opportunities and will be available for repair consultation after completion.
