About This Call

Maitland, Florida is a community of approximately 20,000 residents located in Orange County, just north of Orlando and Winter Park. The region is the #1 tourist destination in the country, attracting over 70 million visitors annually, and is home to world-class theme parks, performance venues, a top-rated university, and a world-recognized hub of innovation, technology and diversity. This public art project is part of an endowment established for communities within the 21-mile stretch of the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project.

Artwork may be located in right-of-way areas adjacent to I-4 within Maitland city limits, provided installation does not interfere with ongoing I-4 maintenance. Alternatively, art may be installed on the landings of a pedestrian bridge currently under construction just south of the Maitland/I-4 interchange. No art may be attached to the bridge itself. The Public Art Committee seeks unique and creative solutions evaluated on professional experience, creativity, artistic excellence, durability and compatibility. Artworks must withstand harsh Florida weather including intense sun, seasonally heavy rains and hurricane-force winds, with consideration given to materials' ability to resist rust and fading.

$194,000 has been approved for the artwork, inclusive of all associated expenses including permitting, infrastructure, lighting, fabrication, and installation. The five-member Maitland Public Art Committee will serve as the selection panel, with final approvals from the Maitland City Commission and I-4 Art Endowment Committee. Three finalists will be selected to provide site-specific proposals and will each receive a $2,000 stipend. The winning project will be recommended at the February 24, 2020 Maitland City Commission meeting, then forwarded to the I-4 Art Endowment Committee for final approval. Artists should submit a professional resume, letter of interest outlining their approach, and 3-12 images of past work. Previous experience with public art projects of similar budget is preferred. Application deadline: November 11, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. MST.
