About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking up to thirteen (13) one-dimensional designs for its Public Art program. Artists are invited to submit between one (1) and three (3) final draft one-color vector illustrations for maintenance hole covers in the Mercado Parking Lot at the Canyon Country Community Center. Up to thirteen (13) artists will be chosen, with one artist potentially having up to three different designs selected. The total artist stipend is $750 per design for a total of $9,750 for all artwork.

Designs should reflect a water theme and be submitted as one-color scalable vector artwork suitable for stamping into metal. Artwork must fit on a pre-determined template approximately 39-3/8" in diameter. Final artwork must be an original design suitable for viewing by all ages, and may not be created for advertisement or to promote business, product, or viewpoint. Designs must not include any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, business names, corporate or organizational branding, or images of drugs. Branding exception can be made to include 'City of Santa Clarita' or 'Santa Clarita' in the artwork if desired. Artists chosen agree to provide one round of revisions to artwork if needed to meet production budget.

Eligibility: Artists 18 years of age or older residing in the United States may submit individual or collaborative applications. Submission deadline is February 28, 2021 at midnight. Required materials include up to three final artwork entries, cover letter, resume or CV, up to seven (7) images of previous design work, and artist statement. Evaluation criteria include visual impact, interpretation and creativity, composition and design, adherence to design criteria and eligibility guidelines, and clarity of project-specific intent and artistic vision. Timeline: March 2021 – entries juried; April 2021 – finalists selected; May 2021 – Arts Commission and City Council review; June 2021 – selected finalists notified.
