About This Call
The Public Art Committee is seeking designs, plans, fabrication and installation of a railing replacement for the Main Beach Parking Lot, located on the eastern side along Ocean Way at 148 S Ocean Way. The current railing spans approximately 230 feet with 20-foot returns on the northern and southern ends. The project calls for a total replacement of the railing as well as an artistic treatment to the wall underneath.
Designs must address the theme of Oceanic Awareness: the impact of humans on the ocean and its lifeforms, and the effect that has on daily lives. Applicants must submit two distinct designs per application—one addressing the theme and one artist choice. All designs must include kinetic features or components as part of the overall design. Materials, design and palette must withstand the harsh salt air environment at this oceanfront location and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. Designs must comply with City of Deerfield Beach Building Code for Railings, including 2017 FBC (HVHZ) standards for 170 mph wind speed. Installation of decorative aluminum fencing must be designed and sealed by a licensed engineer. The city will waive Building Department permit fees. The selected artist or team may need to adjust designs to accommodate amphitheater-style seating at the center portion if requested by the City of Deerfield Beach CRA.
The selected artist or artist team will receive up to $120,000, which must cover all taxes, insurance, equipment, materials, personnel, engineers and contractors necessary for design, fabrication and installation. A detailed budget and fee schedule must be included in the application, along with a maintenance budget projection for one year after installation. No change orders will be issued. The selected artist or team must create a time lapse video documenting design, fabrication and installation, and arrange for community participation events. This call is open to artists in the Tri County area (Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade) whose body of work and skills are proven for a project of this magnitude and type. Artists are not eligible if they are immediate family members or business partners of Public Art Committee or CRA Staff members. Applicants may submit up to 2 applications with 2-5 images, 0-2 audio files, and 0-3 video files per application (2-10 total samples).
