About This Call
The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, seeks one artist to work on the two-phased Madison Valley Stormwater Improvement Project. The artist will develop and install site-specific artwork for the Madison Valley Northwest Diversion Project and act as design team artist for the Washington Park Stormwater Storage Project.
Phase one involves creating artwork for a landscaped detention basin being expanded at 30th Avenue East and East John Street in Seattle. The above-ground stormwater storage facility will be re-vegetated with grass and incorporate landscaping, pathways, and gathering areas. A dry creekbed will form an experiential walk as a focal point. Phase two involves working with Seattle Public Utilities staff and consultants to integrate artwork into drainage improvements at Washington Park, including a conveyance pipeline and stormwater storage. The artwork should address or express visually the issues surrounding stormwater management and enhance the aesthetics of the area.
Eligibility: Open to established professional artists living in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, or California. Students are not eligible. The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs encourages diversity in its collection and will consider artistic diversity as a selection factor. Selection will be based on strength and artistic merit of past works, ability and experience creating durable outdoor site-specific artwork, ability to think broadly and conceptually, ability to collaborate, and contribution to the diversity of the city's art collection.
Compensation: $70,000 for Phase One (inclusive of all costs) and $100,000 for Phase Two. Application deadline: January 6, 2009, 11:00 p.m. PST. Applicants will be notified of results by April 2009. Contact Ruri Yampolsky at (206) 684-7309 or [email protected] for questions regarding scope of work or project background.
