About This Call
Carnation Contemporary in Portland, OR is accepting entries for an exhibition of risograph printed ephemera and artwork of varying sizes and formats. The call seeks submissions that range from didactic to abstract to experimental to figural to informational, acknowledging the technical and utilitarian aspect of duplication and editioning made possible through risograph processes, in addition to the burgeoning fine arts usages of the machine. Objects and prints can be produced by individuals or collectives. Selected works will be contextualized through an exploration of riso as a communicative process that complicates the once-quotidian printer and augments artists' capacity to disseminate their work.
Curator Ella Ray is an art historian, cultural worker, and curator who produces texts, environments, and exhibitions that imagine and attempt to realize worlds otherwise. Ray sees remapping, remixing, archiving, and highlighting Black art histories as a community-based practice that must occur beyond the academy and museum spaces.
Carnation Contemporary is a member-funded art gallery in Portland, OR. The gallery acknowledges that the history and culture of gallery spaces have not been inclusive to BIPOC artists historically and currently, and is working to dismantle this structure to generate a more equitable space for artists and arts workers. All are welcome to apply. BIPOC, LGBTQUI2S+ artists and people from historically marginalized communities are especially encouraged to apply. Entry fee is $25.00. Application deadline is October 22, 2021. Applicants should submit up to 5 work samples (images, audio, or video). Exhibition dates are December 2021. Shipped works must arrive by November 26, 2021.
