About This Call
LUX 2019 is a photography competition headquartered at Southern Illinois University and managed by the student photo club Photogenesis. Entering its eighth year, the competition is expanding nationwide this year. Entry fee is $15 for 1-5 images. Eligibility is open to currently enrolled students in USA higher education institutions.
The theme for 2019 is "Navigating the Unknown," inviting submissions that explore confusion, uncertainty, or anxiety through both fictional and non-fictional approaches. Any photo-based technique is acceptable, including creative use of specialty lenses, multiple exposures, lighting, and collage. The juror is Garin Horner, an award-winning fine art photographer whose work has been exhibited in museums including the Detroit Institute for the Arts, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the Musée du Louvre. He holds an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Prizes include Best Image ($300), 1st Runner Up ($200), and 2nd Runner Up ($100). The Lux publication is made possible by SIU's fine art activity fee, charitable donations from photo alumni and local businesses, and Photogenesis fundraising initiatives. Photogenesis, established in 1979, is a student organization that organizes photo exhibitions, hosts guest artist lectures, coordinates fundraising events, and hosts workshops.
