About This Call

Adventist HealthCare System announces a Call for Artists for exterior artwork for White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. The selected sculpture will serve as a memorial to Lucille Byard, an African-American woman who was denied health care services in 1943, and whose legacy shapes the health system's mission and values today. The artwork will be located in the front entrance courtyard of the White Oak Medical Center.

The memorial was originally envisioned as a portrait bust based on historical photographs of Lucille Byard, to be installed on a pedestal. However, artists may propose other approaches and interpretations, including non-representational compositions in any media. The artwork must accord with the site conditions, including the scale and space of the front entrance courtyard. The selected artist will collaborate with the landscape architect to properly locate, orient, and illuminate the sculpture within the space of the courtyard, and to prepare the structural footing or other site conditions. Artwork must be suitable for outdoor weather conditions and must be durable, sustainable, and very easy to maintain.

Budget is approximately $50,000, which includes artist fees, design, fabrication, delivery, installation, taxes, insurance, documentation of artwork, and subcontracted services and travel. The budget includes both the sculpture and pedestal if necessary, but does not include structural footing. Adventist HealthCare especially encourages submission from artists local to Silver Spring Maryland, including the Mid-Atlantic states of the Columbia Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists – Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Lucille Byard lived in New York City, attending Jamaica Seventh-day Adventist Church, and artists in that area are encouraged to apply as well. Adventist HealthCare especially encourages submission from women and artists of color. Artists may apply in teams.

Application materials required: cover letter (1000 words max) including statement of interest addressing the story of Lucille Byard and explaining how the artist is uniquely suited for the project; resume or CV (4 pages max) including contact information, previous relevant art commissions, exhibitions, awards, grants, and education; biography or artist statement (500 words max); three references; and image list with title, media, year completed, dimensions, and budget or commission price for each submitted image. Submit 5-10 images of work examples (JPEG or JPG only, up to 5MB with minimum 1200 pixels on longest side) and up to 1 video (MOV, MP4, WMV, 3GP, AVI, ASF, MPG, M2T, MKV, M2TS, up to 100MB). Submit applications online via www.callforentry.org no later than 5 p.m. CST on January 31, 2020.

Skyline Art will create a shortlist of artists and present their submissions to the Art Committee of Adventist HealthCare, who will select three or four artists to request detailed proposals. Artists requested to submit a proposal will receive a $500 stipend to develop their proposal and present it in person to the Art Committee in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Selection criteria include artistic merit and technical expertise, demonstration of successful art projects of similar scope, and expressed interest in telling the story of Lucille Byard at Adventist HealthCare. Shortlisted artists will be notified February 17, 2020. Finalists will be notified and proposals requested March 9, 2020. Proposal presentations, maquettes, and on-site interviews are scheduled for April 20, 2020. Selected artist will be notified April 24, 2020.
