About This Call

Colorado State University is seeking to commission an art piece or installation for the Sutherland Garden at the Lory Student Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. The art must be harmonious with the existing architecture and landscaping, easily maintained, and serve as the focal point of the community garden. The piece should reflect the nature and pride of the community on campus and in Fort Collins, and may incorporate ideas such as the history of Tom Sutherland and the Sutherland family, the role of the Lory Student Center, the view of the foothills, mid-century and contemporary international style architecture, or materials and forms that reflect contemporary notions of space and environment.

The Sutherland Garden is located on the west side of the Lory Student Center, nestled between the theatre and west entrance, overlooking the West Lawn, Lagoon, and the Foothills. The artwork will be positioned at the far east end of the lawn, directly in front of the sunken lounge, and will be visible from all directions including the LSC Theatre, Sunken Lounge, and west building entrance. The piece must be constructed to withstand Colorado's climate. The artist is responsible for fabrication and installation, as well as obtaining documented certification by a licensed structural engineer. Budget is $50,000 maximum, inclusive of all costs associated with design, fabrication, installation, structural engineering, and professional liability insurance.

Eligibility is open to professional artists who are Colorado residents, CSU alumni, or those with a strong connection to the university. Application deadline is September 20, 2013. Required materials include resume with educational background and professional achievements, references, letter of intent, and comprehensive portfolio demonstrating success in comparable projects regarding size, scope, structural logistics, and budget. The Art Selection Committee will select up to 3 artists for interviews and conceptual design submissions. Selected finalists will receive a $1,500 honorarium. The Committee will recommend one artist to the Vice President of Operations for final approval. Installation is scheduled for summer 2014 at the earliest, but no later than the beginning of fall semester. Contact: Michael Bent at [email protected].
