About This Call
This is a juried visual art competition and exhibition open to two-dimensional figurative artists (referencing the human figure) over the age of 18, working in painting, drawing, printmaking, or fiber. The 2023 juror is Nicole M. Santiago, a Professor of Art at the College of William and Mary who teaches life drawing, drawing, color theory, and 2D design. Santiago's works consist of semi-autobiographical paintings, drawings, and prints portraying mundane domestic scenes. She has exhibited widely in nearly 140 exhibitions, with works reproduced in publications including The Artist's Magazine, Art New England, INPA (International Painting Annual), and Fine Art Connoisseur. She is a recipient of full-fellowship residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Ballinglen Artist Foundation, and was recently awarded first prize at the Bethesda Painting Awards.
Artists may submit up to three works for a non-refundable $30 entry fee. All works must have been created within the last five years (no later than 2019). Images should be 300 dpi JPEG files, no smaller than 5" x 7" in scale. Accepted works must be two-dimensional, framed or otherwise ready to hang. Sculpture and photography are not accepted. Artists are responsible for shipping their work both ways; pre-paid return shipping labels should be included in the package.
Awards include Best of Show ($2,500), Second Prize ($1,500), Third Prize ($1,000), Fourth Prize ($750), and Fifth Prize ($500). Notifications of acceptance will be emailed the week of September 4, 2023. The deadline for received works is October 15. The exhibition opens October 28 at 7–9 pm with the juror in attendance to give remarks and select prize winners. The exhibition ends December 3, with return shipping beginning December 6. Contact: [email protected] or (570) 372-4059.
