About This Call

The AIPP Commission is seeking an artist or team of artists to design, develop, fabricate, and install a creative solution to one of the city's major entryways. The successful approach may incorporate artwork, landform art, and landscape design elements that blend the natural beauty of existing views with historical elements of the site to provide a sense of invitation and welcome to the Longmont community. Any variety of materials may be incorporated, but the project in its entirety must be permanent in timelessness and materials.

The site is approximately four acres located at the northwest most area of the median dividing the north/south Diagonal highway, at the intersection of Hover Street and the Diagonal. This is a major entryway to Longmont from Boulder, with approximately 33,000 cars passing the intersection daily at 65 mph. The site lies at the crest of a small hill with views of the surrounding area including hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and Twin Peaks Mall. Train tracks parallel the highway on the south side, used by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, with potential for future light rail passenger service. There is no pedestrian access to the site.

Up to $225,000 is available for design, fabrication, and installation, including design, site preparation, materials, labor, construction, installation, engineering, permits, travel, insurance, and required meetings. Any practicing visual artist may apply, and artists wishing to collaborate may submit a joint proposal. The AIPP Commission encourages artists from all cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds to apply. Submission requirements include contact information, a statement of interest (up to one page), 10 images representing similar work, a corresponding list with location, price, and media of artwork, resume/history of firm if applicable, and a list of five installations or projects completed within the past five years with project manager contact information. A selection panel will select three to five finalists who will receive $1,200 and travel stipends to attend an orientation, site visit, and present ideas and maquettes. The winner will be announced in February 2008, with installation and dedication planned for Winter 2008/Spring 2009. Winning artist/team must provide proof of insurance within thirty days of contract award, with Commercial General Liability insurance limits not less than $150,000 per person and $600,000 per occurrence.
