About This Call

Longmont's Art in Public Places (AIPP) Commission is accepting applications from artists or teams of artists for a public art project at Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport, located on Airport Road on the western edge of Longmont, Colorado. The AIPP Commission is administered under the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center.

The commission seeks artwork that takes into account the history of the area, the history of the airport and local aviation, the high visibility of the site, and the environment. All artwork will be sited on the grounds outside of the airport itself and visible to vehicular and air traffic. The airport was established in 1922 and dedicated in 1942. It is named for NASA Astronaut Vance Brand, a Longmont native who flew the Apollo-Soyuz mission in the early 1970s and the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1982. The airport currently hosts approximately 350 airplanes and averages 275 flights per day. Approximately 10,000 cars per day travel on Airport Road between Nelson and 9th Avenue.

AIPP is seeking work of highly durable, low-maintenance materials that displays compatibility with the site, appropriateness, timelessness, and quality. The work must be original. Up to $40,000 is available for an artist or team of artists, including all fees for design, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, artists' insurance, and miscellaneous expenses. Finalists will have the opportunity to visit the site with a travel stipend offered. A selection panel made up of citizens, artists, city staff, and Airport Advisory Board members will review submissions based on quality and innovation, timelessness, compatibility with the site, permanence, and public safety. Three finalists will be invited to tour the site and make presentations to the selection panel, with an honorarium and travel stipend provided.
