About This Call
The Loma del Rey Art Planning Committee and the Albuquerque Arts Board are seeking artists for a 1%-for-Art project at Loma del Rey Park, located on the north side of Comanche Road, NE between Erbbe Street and Orlando Place in Albuquerque. The 3.84-acre park is an active pedestrian area used by students from nearby Sombra del Monte Elementary School, Madison Middle School, and Sandia High School, as well as for athletic activities.
The committee seeks a work of art that tells time, such as an inventive sundial artistically implemented with imagination and creativity while conveying the basic science of the device. The artwork should serve as an icon for the neighborhood and engage viewers for both its artistic merit and educational value. The proposed site is near the intersection of Moon and Comanche NE on the south side of the park, bordering Comanche Road and facing Madison Middle School. The artist should design the artwork to be in full sun as much as possible.
The artwork must be fabricated from durable outdoor media that are safe and easy to maintain, with careful consideration for the safety of small children who play in the park. The scale should be appropriate to the site. A budget of $30,000 is available for the commission. This is an open competition for all artists residing in the United States. Submissions must include 10 images (9 of past work and 1 proposal image), an artist's statement (limit 3000 characters), and a resume. Employees of the City of Albuquerque are not eligible. Contact Dan Fuller at [email protected] or (505) 768-3837 for more information.
