About This Call
The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a lighting installation for the arrivals roadway underpass at Kansas City International Airport's new single terminal. The work will be located on the ceiling above two pedestrian crossings between the garage and terminal at the arrivals curb, spanning approximately 3,100 square feet (20 feet wide by 155 feet long). The installation shall not hang lower than 16 feet above ground level to maintain clearance for vehicular traffic. Artists may interpret the installation as a pair (diptych) or as duplicate pieces, and must coordinate with both design and construction teams for installation and infrastructure.
Eligibility is open to professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age. International artists are requested to use a U.S.-based fabricator. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible. The budget for this commission is up to $500,000 (US dollars), all inclusive, covering stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, engineering approval, lighting materials, and installation.
Submission materials due by February 13, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MST include: a letter of interest (up to 1 page), resume/CV, portfolio images (up to 10 images and/or up to 10 audio and/or video files, with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 20 total samples), and an image list with details such as title, year made, materials, dimensions, and budget. The selection panel will evaluate submissions based on excellence, relevant prior experience, appropriateness to site and project, durability, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
