About This Call

The City of Liberty, MO Tourism Committee and Visit Liberty invite applications for a mural project in Liberty, Missouri. The mural will be located on Kansas Street on a stamped concrete wall in front of Crowley Furniture at the intersection of West Kansas Street and Forrest Avenue. The wall is 211 ft. wide at the top and approximately 9.5 ft high at the tallest point.

Applications are invited from professional and emerging muralists/artists, graphic designers with experience in large-scale outdoor works, and individuals or teams with a proven track record of completing mural projects. Both muralists and graphic designers may submit work in digital form. The final artwork will be applied to the wall using high-quality vinyl. Up to five artists will be selected to submit formal proposals and will each receive a $1,000 stipend. The final selected artist will receive a $10,000 stipend, paid 50% upon signing the contract and 50% upon completion. The City of Liberty will be responsible for wall preparation, printing, and installation.

Applications must include: contact information, artist statement and bio, examples of previous mural work (minimum three images), and references from at least two people familiar with past mural projects. Selected proposal submissions should include concept sketches or digital renderings, a description of the proposed mural including intended theme and community relevance, and an itemized budget for the print-ready digital file. Visual imagery must be appropriate for all audiences and cannot contain advertising, partisan politics, sexual or religious content. The Selection Committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit and originality, relevance to the community, feasibility of the design, and the artist's experience and ability to complete the project within the timeframe and budget. Upon completion, all copyright and licensing of the mural will belong to the City of Liberty in perpetuity. The artist may use the mural as a work sample in their portfolio and for future project bids. Timeline: Call closes January 31, 2025; selected artists notified by February 14; proposals due March 14; final artist selected by March 28; City Council approval in April; full design draft by end of May; installation by end of July.
