About This Call
The Leigh Weimers Emerging Artists Awards, established by the Rotary Club of San Jose in memory of longtime Mercury News columnist and arts supporter Leigh Weimers, give unrestricted cash grants to emerging artists. Awards are presented to outstanding artists in the visual arts, performing arts, written word, and music who have yet to be widely recognized for their talent, vision, and artistic accomplishments.
Eligibility is restricted to residents of Santa Clara County only. The residency requirement is strictly observed. Entry fee is $10.00. Applicants may submit up to 20 images, 3 audio files, and 3 video files (20 total samples maximum). Special submission requirements apply for writers: screenplays and scripts require a video of approximately 5 minutes of a staged or unstaged reading with a brief description and plot summary; novels require a short chapter with a brief book summary; poems and short stories require 3-5 samples.
The submission deadline is June 30, 2018 at 5:00pm MDT with no extensions. Winners are required to attend two mandatory events at the Rotary San Jose Summit Center in downtown San Jose: Awards Program Rehearsal on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 (approximately 1:00pm - 4:00pm, full afternoon attendance required) and Awards Program and Luncheon on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 (11:00am - 1:30pm).
