About This Call
The City of Lee's Summit Police Department and Arts + Culture Division seek to commission a professional artist or artist team to create an outdoor, site-responsive civic art piece for the new South Substation's main entrance. The art piece will serve as an iconic K9 memorial installation honoring all K9 officers who have served the Lee's Summit Police Department since 1991. The memorial will be placed at 3650 SW Windemere Drive, Lee's Summit, MO, at a highly visible location that will be the first space officers and visitors see when approaching the facility.
The art piece should incorporate the concepts "In Honor of the K-9s Who Have Served LSPD" and "In service and sacrifice, they stand with us." The work should depict a Belgian Malinois breed and honor 10 K9s with allowance for future additions. The space allotted is 6' x 8', and a sculptural work is preferred. The piece may include illumination and should allow for public interaction or touch. The total project budget is not to exceed $45,000, all-inclusive of design fees, fabrication, materials, delivery, engineering approval, lighting, and installation.
Applicants must be professional visual artists or artist teams residing in the United States and at least 18 years of age. Submissions are due by March 24, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT and must include a letter of intent (up to 1 page), three professional references (up to 1 page), resume or biographical information (up to 3 pages), work samples (4-10 images and/or 0-5 video files), and an image list with details. Selected finalists will be notified by April 7, 2025 and will receive a $500 stipend to develop a concept proposal for presentation to the selection panel. The artwork should be installed by July/August 2025. Applicants should have experience with outdoor installation in Missouri's climate and executing projects from concept to completion within specified budgets and timelines. Previous experience working in the public realm and with public agencies is preferred.
