About This Call
Denver Botanic Gardens seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original work of art for integration into its Le Potager (Kitchen) garden, situated in the central area of the Gardens' York Street Denver site near the Monet Pool. This commission is open to Colorado artists and teams working in durable materials. The total budget available for the commission is $55,000 USD.
Artists are encouraged to think beyond mere representation of plant life or traditional garden art. The Gardens is open to abstract interpretations, conceptual references to the garden, and a sense of whimsy. Artists are invited to consider related subject matters including seeds, pollinators, fostering discovery, and visitor interaction. Winter interest should be considered in proposals. The artwork should be mobile, as gardens change over time. A variety of materials will be considered, but durability, longevity, and ease of care are priorities. Ephemeral materials and kinetic works will not be considered. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance of the outdoor installation. The work will be exposed to weather and physical stresses and should be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials.
Applicants must currently live and work in Colorado. Applicants will submit eight digital images of previously completed works, a résumé (1-2 pages, or up to 8 pages for teams), and a statement of interest (maximum 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Up to three semifinalists will be selected for interviews. If a formal proposal is requested, the artist will receive a $500 honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person. From the interview or proposal, an artist or artist team will be selected for the commission. The $55,000 budget is inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, and contingency.
