About This Call

The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to create large-scale ceramic installations for The New Single Terminal at KCI Airport. The ceramics will be located at the north and south walls of the check-in hall adjacent to the glazing, displayed on a plinth to be designed and engineered within the project budget. The size and extent are to be proposed by the artist. Materials and construction must be approved by the terminal architect. Ceramic works should avoid incorporating visible apertures that would allow passengers to dispose of trash. Bracing must be provided by the artist to prevent overturning in a seismic event, with engineering provided by a licensed structural engineer subcontracted to the artist.

The check-in hall is a major moment in the passenger experience, marking Kansas City's "front door" for all departing passengers. The space measures over 700 feet long, 90 feet wide, and 35 feet high, with distinctive steel "Y" columns supporting the roof and providing a broad, column-free interior. The hall features terrazzo flooring, bronze-colored facade supports, natural hemlock wood ceilings, and a monumental wall of vein-cut Missouri limestone.

The total public art budget for this location is up to $400,000 (US dollars), all inclusive. Budget includes stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, approval by a Missouri-licensed engineer, lighting materials, and installation. Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age are eligible. Artists located outside the United States are requested to use a U.S.-based fabricator. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible to apply. Submission materials required: Letter of Interest (up to 1 page), Resume/CV, portfolio images (5-10 images, up to 10 audio files, up to 5 video files, 5-20 total samples), and an image list with details of portfolio items including title, date, materials, size and budget.
