About This Call

Land Line is a low-residency artist program at Denver Botanic Gardens where artists use the Gardens' collections, landscapes, and resources to create work exploring nature and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Artists create most of their work in their own studio spaces but are required to visit the Gardens at least once within a pre-determined timeframe. Time spent on-site is geared towards meeting with staff, exploring gardens and collections, research, and conceptualization. Artists outside of Colorado and the Denver metro area are welcome to apply.

The residency is supported by a $3,500 honorarium. Artists are responsible for arranging their own travel, lodging, food, and supplies. Artists must attend three virtual cohort meetings to share progress and connect with other artists, including a final meeting to share completed work. Artworks must be completed by the end of the residency year. Denver Botanic Gardens may acquire one artwork proposed by the artist for consideration, though acquired artworks may be exhibited in the future and the residency does not culminate in an exhibition.

Artists select a residency focus and are paired with a staff member to serve as catalyst and knowledge resource. In 2024, artists can select from: urban trees and connections to people or wildlife; urban ecology; scientific/botanical illustration; or habitat restoration and native plants. Artists choose a two-month Focus Period for scheduling site visits and communication with their staff partner. Applicants must submit an artist statement, project proposal, website or portfolio link, three to 20 representative work samples (1200 pixels or greater, under 5MB), resume/CV, and artist biography. The residency is open to professional and emerging artists age 21 and over located in the continental United States.
