About This Call
The Land Line Artist Residency at Denver Botanic Gardens is offered in a hybrid online and in-person format that allows artists to maintain other professional pursuits while engaged in residency activities. Artists working in a variety of media in the visual arts will be considered, including botanical illustrators who will work with the School of Botanical Art & Illustration alongside the Gardens Research & Conservation team. Selected artists will have access to the Gardens' collections and will work with Garden staff in key areas including living collections, herbarium, library, art collections and archives, and research laboratories.
Artists in residence are expected to explore and enhance the Gardens' mission to connect people with plants. Residencies typically span two to three months of focused time, during which one or more visits will be arranged with Gardens staff. Local artists can take advantage of regular site visits and in-person meetings. Artists outside of Colorado or beyond the Denver metro area can conduct most of their residency remotely but are required to visit the Gardens in person at least once to talk with staff and explore gardens and collections. Travel and lodging are coordinated by the artist and paid from within the residency honorarium. Artists are welcome to collaborate and apply together. At the end of the residency year, artists will convene for an online meeting or virtual program to be determined.
The residency is open to all professional and emerging artists located in the continental United States, age 21 and over. Denver Botanic Gardens seeks to support and strengthen diverse perspectives—individuals who identify as part of a historically marginalized group are encouraged to submit. Honorarium: $3,500. As product and documentation of the residency, Denver Botanic Gardens may retain one artwork. Applicants must submit 3-5 images of work samples.
