About This Call
Denver Botanic Gardens' artist residency program, Land Line, is dedicated to supporting artists who foster appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of the natural world. By celebrating individual perspectives and encouraging creative exchange, the residency program seeks to inspire and bring awareness to nature and explore humanity's unique connection to the landscape.
Land Line's flexible format allows artists to maintain other professional pursuits while being supported by the residency. Selected artists will have access to the Gardens' collections (living plants, natural history, art, books), scientists, curators, and multiple locations for their work, including the Denver York Street location and Chatfield Farms. Artists working in visual art, music, spoken word, poetry/literature, film/animation, and other born-digital projects will be considered. Botanical illustrators are included to work with the School of Botanical Art & Illustration alongside the Gardens Research & Conservation team. Residency lengths typically span two to three months with timeframe and site visits arranged with Gardens staff. Artists outside Colorado and the Denver Metro can conduct the majority of their residency remotely but must visit in person at least once. Travel and lodging are coordinated by the artist and paid from the residency honorarium of $3,500.
As product of the residency, Denver Botanic Gardens shall receive one artwork and retain the right to use an image or other representation to promote the artist, the residency, or related programs. Applicants must submit an artist bio (250 words max), artist statement/residency concept (450 words max), website/portfolio link, resume/CV, two references, and a minimum of three professional work samples in at least one media category (images, audio, or video, up to 15 total samples). The residency is open to professional and emerging artists located in the continental U.S.A., age 21 and over. Denver Botanic Gardens seeks to support diverse perspectives—BIPOC applicants and individuals who identify as part of a historically marginalized group are strongly encouraged to submit. Deadline: March 20, 2022.
