About This Call

Lake Linganore seeks professional artists to create a permanent, large-scale exterior public sculpture for the main entry to the residential community. The sculpture should reinforce the values of the community, both physically and symbolically, acting as both landmark and gateway.

Artists must demonstrate: experience realizing permanent, large-scale exterior public sculpture in low maintenance, highly durable materials with at least three completed exterior public art commissions with budgets over $50,000; experience working with private developers on site-specific exterior public art in residential housing development settings; demonstrated success creating artwork incorporated into traffic medians or traffic circles, addressing local and state code, traffic sight lines, integration with public utilities, irrigation and lighting systems, and maintenance; experience with in-depth community engagement with diverse community members and stakeholders; and extensive experience collaborating with complex project teams including engineers, developers, landscape architects, community groups, and government agencies. Artists must be available to begin work immediately and meet the demands of a fast-track design process.

Finalists will receive a $1,000 stipend to cover travel and design proposal expenses. Due to an accelerated construction schedule, finalist proposals must include detailed plans for foundations and footings appropriate to the site and Maryland state requirements. Submissions should include 10 images, image description list with all agencies worked with on commissions, resume (no more than 4 pages as PDF), 250-word statement of interest, 250-word artist statement, and four references. Lake Linganore is a planned community founded in 1968, comprised of 15 villages surrounding a system of small lakes, with an Arts and Crafts design aesthetic informed by architect E. Fay Jones, who apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright.
