About This Call
Laemmle Theatres is seeking an artist to design and fabricate an original, site-specific mural for the Newhall theatre location in Santa Clarita, California. The artwork will be located on the side of the building adjacent to Railroad Avenue. The mural will be installed for a minimum of three years, after which Laemmle will evaluate the artwork to ensure it meets maintenance standards.
The selected artwork will occupy two locations on the east side of the building: a southern mural space measuring 38' wide by 20' in height, and a northern mural space measuring 41' wide by 20' in height. Murals will start 10'8" above the sidewalk. The exterior finish is stucco, and mural paint must be satin finish. Artwork must be constructed of durable materials capable of withstanding harsh desert weather conditions (high winds and extreme temperatures), comply with standard engineering practices, and conform to ADA standards. No electricity will be available onsite. The artist must provide scaffolding needed to reach 30'8".
Design concepts should reflect the brand of Laemmle Theatres, movies, and the Newhall area. Artwork must be original, suitable for all ages, and may not be used for advertisement or promote any business, product, or viewpoint. Designs must not include intellectual property breaches, trademarks, brands, or images of drugs. Creativity and innovation are encouraged. Semi-finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium and have 30 days to develop a proposal. The selected finalist is responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, installation, and associated expenses. The artist must provide installation instructions, a maintenance guide, and insurance coverage for the installation period. Eligible applicants must be 18 years or older with a US mailing address. Application materials include resume/CV, up to five images of previous work (at least one public artwork), image descriptions, cover letter, and artist statement. Entry deadline: December 10, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MST.
