Lackawanna Station Mural Project

Lackawanna Station is a redevelopment site in downtown Montclair, NJ that will feature small and micro businesses, markets, and public art. Rather than remain vacant during development, the space is open 7 days a week to the public from 10am to 8pm and hosts up to 5,000 people per weekend market day. Artists of many disciplines are adorning the common area walls and corners with murals, sculpture, music and dance.

This open call invites Essex County, New Jersey residents to create murals for the space. Artists have creative freedom with no theme requirement. Murals will be painted in Fall 2025 and featured for six months. Mural dimensions are 17 feet wide by 8 feet high. Selected artists will receive a $1,500 honorarium that covers all costs, including materials. A jury panel selected by Studio Montclair in accordance with public art best practices will review and choose final artists.

Applications must be submitted by June 12, 2025 and should include: a brief artist statement (maximum one page), a mural concept responding to appropriateness criteria, a short bio and resume including public art mural experience, proof of Essex County residency, budget breakdown, timeline for completion, and samples of public art (maximum 6 images). This call welcomes both experienced muralists and artists looking to expand into large-scale public art.
