Kroger Art Project | Building Community Through Art (Royal Oak & Shelby Township)

Artrain, Inc. is seeking artists or artist-led teams to design and create large-scale indoor murals to be commissioned by the Kroger Company and installed at its new stores in Royal Oak and Shelby Township, Michigan. The objective is to create a space that encourages community gathering and celebrates the spirit of the neighborhood. The final artwork will be approximately 13 feet wide by 5 feet high, installed on the wall of the indoor seating area in the new Kroger stores. Exact dimensions will be provided to selected artists prior to the creation of proposals.

This commission is open to all artists with priority given to artists living in or having an affiliation with Southeast Michigan, specifically the Royal Oak/Shelby Township area. There is no application fee. To be considered, artists should submit a minimum of 4 examples of their work (maximum 8), an artist bio (one page maximum; five pages maximum for artist-led teams), a resume or work history (two page maximum), and information on the artist's or artist-led teams' connection to the Royal Oak or Shelby Township area.

Finalists for each location will be invited to submit specific proposals and will receive an honorarium of $200 for their efforts and materials used to create the proposed design. The final selected artists will receive $7,500 in two payments: half upon signing a contract with Artrain, Inc. and the remainder upon delivering the artwork. $7,500 is the maximum project budget and is inclusive of all artist fees and all expenses related to design development, including engineering, fabrication, travel, transportation, insurance and all other project-related expenses. Installation of the artworks will be handled by the Kroger Company. The Selection Panel, made up of Artrain and Kroger Company staff, will review submitted materials and select the top 3-5 artists for each location based on artistic excellence, appropriateness of medium and style to project goals, experience with similar projects, and evidence of relationship to and understanding of the Royal Oak/Shelby Township community.
