About This Call
Kipaipai Workshops, in partnership with Donkey Mill Art Center, announces a 30-day artist residency in Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi in July 2022. This residency is open to artists and makers (families welcome) seeking immersion in nature, community engagement, and concentrated time to research and conceptualize future projects. One artist will be chosen to receive one month housing in Kailua-Kona, which does not include a studio.
The residency is focused on offering one artist (and their immediate family) a respite from regular studio practice to focus on introspection, research, conceptualizing, and strategizing future projects. As part of the residency, the selected artist will lead several workshops and community engagements during the Donkey Mill Art Center's Youth Summer Art Experience programs, which focus on environmental and cultural connections. There may be opportunities for the chosen artist to collaborate with local artists and participate in the Donkey Mill's studios.
Eligibility: Residency is open to English-speaking mid-career or experienced visual artists or makers with teaching experience or community engagement experience preferred. Applicants must be available to conduct workshops or activities in July 2022 and have their own transportation to and from the Kailua-Kona house and Donkey Mill Art Center (approximately 5 miles). Entry fee is $50. Application deadline is December 1, 2021. Applicants must submit an artist statement, examples of work (5-10 total samples: up to 10 images, 5 audio files, and 5 video files), responses to application questions, and a statement on expectations and benefits of the residency. Jurors will select one winner and one runner-up between December 2, 2021 and January 1, 2022. Artist is responsible for all travel expenses including airline travel, rental car, and living expenses.
